HC Deb 21 February 1980 vol 979 cc347-8W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Defence in what ways his Department gives recognition to the Welsh language; and if he will list the statutory forms used by his Department which are either bilingual or have Welsh versions.

Mr. Hayhoe

Although it is my Department's policy that the Armed Forces should generally conduct their affairs in English, steps are taken to recognise the needs and interests of Welsh speakers where appropriate. Consequently, many direction, warning signs, and so on, chiefly but not exclusively in predominantly Welsh-speaking areas, are bilingual. There are no statutory forms in use in my Department which are either bilingual or have Welsh versions.
