HC Deb 20 February 1980 vol 979 cc253-4W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what steps he is taking following the death by suicide of Private James Darkin at an Army barracks in Northampton; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Pym

The tragic death of Private James Darkin occurred on 11 February in the Northants general hospital, to which he had been admitted on 7 February. The circumstances of his death are the subject of a coroner's inquest, which has been adjourned until the results of police and Special Investigation Branch inquiries are available.

The Army takes its responsibilities towards recruits and young soldiers very seriously; bullying of any sort is not tolerated and any such cases are fully investigated and appropriate disciplinary action taken. I shall write to the right hon. Member as soon as my inquiry is completed.
