HC Deb 20 February 1980 vol 979 cc234-5W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will take steps to restrict cigarette advertising to the point of sale; if he will take steps to end all sponsorship of sport and cultural activities by the tobacco industry; what consideration he has given to ensuring that the tobacco industry makes a direct contribution towards the cost of health education; if he will add the carbon monoxide and nicotine content of cigarettes to the present list of tar yields; if he will strengthen the health warning on cigarette packets; when he expects the present discussions with the tobacco industry on the concordat to end; and if he will make a statement.

Sir George Young

All these matters are being considered in the overall review of policy on smoking and health which my hon. and right hon. Friends and I are undertaking before deciding upon the measures we wish to adopt to reduce the incidence of disease from cigarette smoking.

In the context of the negotiations which are taking place with the tobacco industry on what should follow the present three-year voluntary agreements, it would be unhelpful for me to comment further on any particular matter; and I must ask the hon. Member to await the full announcement, which will be made once the negotiations have reached a conclusion.
