HC Deb 20 February 1980 vol 979 c235W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why the right to administer local anaesthetics was taken away from State registered chiropodists; if he will take steps to restore that right to them; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan

There is no question of our taking away their right to administer local anaesthetics. What is proposed, on the advice of the Medicines Commission, is that the amount of local anaesthetic they may administer to any patient in 24 hours should be limited in the interest of safety. I have agreed to meet representatives of the Chiropodists Board and the Society of Chiropodists before any steps are taken to implement this change.
