asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many overseas students in higher education establishments were financed by scholarships and other awards provided out of public funds by the British Council or otherwise in 1977–78; what were the main schemes involved and which universities and polytechnics participated.

Numbers of overseas students on courses of study leading to academic qualifications in higher education, wholly or partially supported by scholarships and awards provided by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, including the Overseas Development Administration or the British Council, were

—from developing countries:

10,204 in 1977 and 9,528 in 1978;

—from developed countries:

509 in the academic year 1977–78.

The main schemes were—

Regional Technical Co-operation;

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan;

British Council Scholarships and Fellowships;

Marshall Scholarships.
