§ Mr. Foulkesasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, in the light of his answer to the hon. Member for South Ayrshire (Mr. Foulkes) of 31 October 1979, relating to production and storage of nuclear waste, he will list the materials which are being transported from the nuclear power stations to Windscale in special vehicles.
§ Mr. RifkindThe materials to which I referred in my answer of 31 October 1979 are, with very minor exceptions, not transported to Windscale. The low-level solid radioactive wastes from Chapel-cross and Hunterston are transported in sealed drums by road to Drigg, Cumbria for disposal at the facility operated by British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. Low-level 351W solid waste at Dounreay is buried on site. The low-level liquid and gaseous wastes are disposed of to the immediate environment and medium-level wastes are in general stored on site.
Fuel elements which have been irradiated in reactors are transported to Windscale in specially designed containers from Chapelcross and Hunterston nuclear power stations byroad and rail respectively. The fuel elements are processed at Windscale for the recovery of usable materials.
