§ Miss Richardsonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what would be the cost in the 1980–81 financial year, of raising the married man's tax allowance, and the additional personal allowance, for 261W lone parents by an amount sufficient to provide a gain in take-home pay of £2 a week for (a) standard rate taxpayers and (b) lower rate taxpayers.
§ Mr. Peter ReesThe estimated cost at 1979–80 income levels would be:
- (1) for basic rate taxpayers to benefit fully about £1,200 million.
- (2) for lower rate taxpayers to benefit fully about £1,450 million.
It is not possible to give a corresponding amount for 1980–81, which will depend on income levels and tax rates and allowances for that financial year.
