HC Deb 05 February 1980 vol 978 c185W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to the reply of the Minister for Social Security to the right hon. Member for Manchester, Wythenshawe, Official Report, 29 January, c. 1115, how many disabled people between 60 and 65 years had been phased into the mobility allowance by the end of 1979 and by the latest available date; and how many claims remain to be processed.

Mr. Prentice

The phasing-in of mobility allowance was completed when claims were invited from 61 to 64-year-olds from 7 September 1979 and the first payments were made from 28 November 1979. Between these dates about 22,000 claims were received from the relevant age group. At 31 December 1979, 8,866 awards had been made to them, and at 28 January 1980, 11,440. Since 28 November 1979 about 8,000 further claims have been received, but no analysis of these by age is available.
