HC Deb 05 February 1980 vol 978 cc109-10W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) how many Krugerrands have been imported in the last six-month period for which figures are available and to what value;

(2) what has been the number of Krugerrands imported each year from 1970 to date.

Mr. Eyre

This information is not available. Imports from South Africa of gold coins of all kinds are given below. It is possible that Krugerrands could also be imported from other countries.

Hundred Kilogrammes
1970
1971 4
1972 3
1973 16
1974 421
1975 403
1976 28
1977 10
1978 23
1979 10
July-December 1979 4
Notes:
(a) in the period July-December 1979 the value of imports of gold coins from South Africa was £2.5 million;
(b) details of the numbers of gold coins imported are not available;
(c) The exchange control and import licensing regulations in force between 15 April 1975 and 12 June 1979 generally prohibited the import of gold coins minted after 1937 other than for sale to persons resident outside the United Kingdom. Consequently imports of such coins over this period were balanced by re-exports.
