HC Deb 05 February 1980 vol 978 c128W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied with the present level of health and safety at work; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mayhew

[pursuant to his reply, 4 February 1980]: I believe that the majority of employers and others responsible for securing health and safety at work are taking appropriate steps to meet their obligations. I am also satisfied that the Health and Safety Commission and Executive is continuing to do valuable work in developing policies to improve standards within the limits of what is reasonably practicable, and in enforcing health and safety legislation approved by Parliament. While the present level of avoidable injuries forbids complacency, I am nevertheless satisfied that real progress continues to be made towards the reduction of hazards at work.
