HC Deb 05 February 1980 vol 978 cc128-30W
Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many persons were registered as unemployed at the latest available date at each employment office located in the docklands designated area; how many of these were school leavers; what is the seasonally adjusted figure for each office, and the percentage of all employees; and if he will give comparable figures in each case for January 1977, 1978 and 1979.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 4 February 1980]: The following table gives, for January 1980 and for each of the other dates specified, the numbers registered as unemployed, and the numbers of school leavers included in these figures, for each of the employment office areas most closely associated with the docklands designated area. * As a result of changing the attendance and payment of benefit from weekly to fortnightly the unemployment figures from October 1979 are not strictly comparable with those for earlier dates. Estimates are not available for local areas, but for the country as a whole, the figures are about 1½ per cent. higher than they would have been under weekly attendance

Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many notified vacancies there were at the latest available date at each employment office located in the docklands designated area; how many notified vacancies there were at each careers office in the docklands designated area; what is the seasonally adjusted figure in each case; and if he will give comparable figures for January 1977, 1978, and 1979.

Mr. Jim Lester

gives, for January 1980 and for each of the other dates specified, the numbers of notified vacancies remaining unfilled in the employment office areas most closely associated with the docklands designated area. Seasonally adjusted figures are not available for local areas. Vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication the figures for employment offices and careers offices should not be added together.
