Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what action his Department has taken, or is contemplating, to deal with the pollution of the river Girvan.

Mr. Rifkind

My Department has participated in discussion of suitable remedies for this problem, but it is not yet clear what action can be taken.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will seek financial assistance from the European Community to combate the pollution of the Girvan when a suitable remedy is clear.

Mr. Rifkind

When a suitable remedy has been found consideration will be given as to whether aid might be available from any European Community source.
