HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c402W
Mr. Faulds

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment why he now intends to allow Hazelmere Estates to proceed with its redevelopment plans for "The Hoop and Grapes" in the City of London on its revised application which is essentially unchanged in regard to the listed building issues; and whether the public inquiry scheduled for 20 January 1981 will be held as planned.

Mr. Monro

A revised application for listed building consent for the partial demolition, alteration and extension of Nos. 46 and 47 ("The Hoop and Grapes" Public House) Aldgate High Street, was submitted to the City Corporation by Hazelmere Estates Ltd. and Charrington & Co. Ltd. on 14 November 1980.

Both the City Corporation and the Greater London Council are minded to grant consent for the proposals, and as demolition works are involved the application was formally referred to the Secretary of State on 12 December in accordance with the normal statutory procedures.

The Secretary of State must now decide whether to call in the application and hold a public inquiry or to leave its determination to the local planning authorities. No decision on this matter has yet been taken.

The earlier application for listed building consent which was submitted to the City Corporation by Hazelmere and Charringtons on 17 December 1979, has now been formally withdrawn. Accordingly, the local public inquiry which had been arranged for 20 January 1981 to consider this application has been cancelled.
