asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will appoint an assessor with special expertise in agricultural and rural planning matters to assist the inspector taking the forthcoming inquiry into the British Airports Authority's planning application in respect of Stansted airport.

As my right hon. Friend announced on 3 December, the names of the assessors who will be appointed to assist the inspector will be announced as soon as possible. My right hon. Friend the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has already agreed to provide an independent appraisal of the agricultural considerations affecting the planning applications for the Inspector and all parties to the inquiry.
