Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department which local authorities have requested his permission to employ sponsored school crossing wardens.

Mr. Brittan

Avon, Devon, East Sussex, Kent and Nottinghamshire county councils, the chief constable of the Lincolnshire Police and the borough of Kettering have asked for a Home Office view on this matter.

Mr. Hardy

(2) if he will take steps to prohibit the sponsorship of school crossing patrols by companies, organisations or industrial companies concerned with the promotion of alcoholic beverages, tobacco, gambling, political activity or surgical goods.

Mr. Brittan

No. Outside London these are matters for local authorities.
