HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c354W
Mr. Thomas Cox

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were refused entry into the United Kingdom by immigration officers at Gatwick airport in the first 11 months of 1980; and, of these, how many have been sent back to their country of origin within 48 hours of arrival.

Mr. Raison

In the first 10 months of 1980, nearly 1,600 persons were refused leave to enter the United Kingdom at Gatwick airport. Figures are not available on those sent back to their country of origin, but it is estimated that about 70 per cent. of those persons had left this country within 48 hours of their arrival.
