HC Deb 18 December 1980 vol 996 cc240-1W
Mr. Brocklebank-Fowler

asked the Lord Privy Seal what further food aid the United Kingdom is providing in response to the appeal of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations for help towards reducing the serious food shortages in Africa.

Mr. Neil Marten

We have now decided to offer a further 30,000 tonnes of cereals to four countries facing particularly serious food shortages, Somalia, Mozambique, Zambia and Kenya. This will be in addition to nearly 40,000 tonnes we have already supplied this year under our bilateral food aid programme to needy African countries. We are also paying about 20 per cent of the cost of food aid supplied by the Community, whose deliveries of cereals to African countries in the last harvest year totalled almost 400,000 tonnes.
