asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give the total number of teachers currently employed in the State sector of education.

In September 1980 there were in England 428,998 teachers in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools, 18,123 in maintained special schools and unattached special units for handicapped children and 1,006 providing education otherwise than at school under section 56 of the Education Act 1944. Part-time teachers are counted on the basis of their full-time equivalence.
