HC Deb 09 December 1980 vol 995 cc329-30W
28. Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many young persons are currently unemployed in the county of South Yorkshire; and how this compares with the numbers unemployed one year earlier.

Mr. Jim Lester

At 9 October 1980, the latest date for which an age analysis is available, the number of young people under 20 years of age registered as unemployed in the county of South Yorkshire was 14,789. The corresponding figure at 11 October 1979 was 8,404. Hon. Members will know that the youth opportunities programme exists to help these young people and that my right hon. Friend has announced a major expansion of the programme for 1981–82.
