HC Deb 04 December 1980 vol 995 c142W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) whether he has any proposals for requiring the listing of materials used in the manufacture of internal sanitary protective tampons on the packet;

(2) whether, pending further research, he will ban the sale of internal sanitary tampons containing carboxy-methycellulose.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

Until I have received the result of the inquiries of the medical advisers in the Department of Healt and Social Security into the risks of using internal sanitary tampons, it would be premature to consider the desirability of requiring the materials used in them to be listed on the packet.

It would also be premature to consider banning the sale of tampons containing particular materials, including carboxymethyl cellulose. Moreover, according to an analysis of the major brands of tampon generally available in the United Kingdom none contains this material.
