HC Deb 04 December 1980 vol 995 cc179-80W
42. Mr. Peter Fraser

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is satisfied with the results achieved by the conservation measures in the North Sea to increase fishing stocks; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

Recent agreements by the EEC Council of Fisheries Ministers on a comprehensive Community conservation policy and, in principle, on a draft control regulation represent major advances in the effective conservation of fish stocks not least in the North Sea. It is too early to judge the effects of these policies though it is to be noted that, following the adoption of national United Kingdom conservation measures similar in many respects to those now adopted by the Community, total allowable catches for some important North Sea stocks have increased in 1980 and for 1981.
