Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will call for a report from the chief constable of Merseyside establishing the cost to public funds arising from the Labour Party march in Liverpool last Sunday;

(2) if he will call for a report from the chief constable of Merseyside establishing how many police officers had their weekend leave cancelled or curtailed in order to be on duty at the Labour Party march in Liverpool last Sunday; and how many policemen were drafted in from other forces.

Mr. Brittan

The chief constable of Merseyside tells me that the additional cost to public funds of the police operation was £29,881; aid was not provided from any other force; no police officer was injured; no dogs were used, but 12 horses were; there were no arrests in connection with the demonstration; and 318 police officers had their rest day cancelled.
