Expressing catches in terms of cod equivalents using the conversion factors proposed by the European Community Commission, the United Kingdom fleet caught on average between 1974 and 1978,—the latest year for which the necessary information is available,—35 per cent. of the total catch by European Community member States of the seven main species — cod, haddock, saithe, whiting, redfish, plaice and mackerel—in all maritime waters.
