HC Deb 08 August 1980 vol 990 cc362-3W
Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether his Department will collect and publish early in the forthcoming academic year statistics on the numbers, countries of origin and sources of funding of overseas students in the maintained sector of further and higher education.

Dr. Boyson

My Department has set up a special exercise to collect early statistics on the numbers of overseas students enrolled for the academic year 1980–81 in the maintained sector of further—including higher—education in England and Wales. The results of this exercise, which will provide broad indications of numbers, should be available towards the end of this year. Information on the country of origin of overseas students will be available later in the academic year. The Department does not collect information on the source of funding of every further education student but information will be held by the Overseas Development Administration for students funded by the Government.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what forecast he has made of the numbers of overseas students proposing to study in the United Kingdom in the next academic year; how this compares with the figures for the current year, and for 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mark Carlisle

As this is the first year in which new entrant overseas students will be charged full cost fees, it is not possible to prepare satisfactory forecasts. However, the most recent UCCA return shows a reduction of 12 per cent. in applications by overseas students compared with the same time last year and 6 per cent. compared with 1978.
