HC Deb 08 August 1980 vol 990 c386W
Mr. Shore

asked the Lord Privy Sea; what recent discussions he has had about the future of Belize; who has taken part in these talks; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Ridley

My right hon. Friend has had no such discussions. I have had several meetings in the past year with the Premier of Belize, and have twice met the leader of the Belizean Opposition.

I met the Guatemalan Foreign Minister for negotiations in Bermuda in May. Officials were present on both sides, as were two representatives of the Belizean Government. British and Guatemalan officials had further talks in New York in July at which a representative of the Belizean Government was present. We have agreed with the Guatemalans to keen details of the negotiations confidential for the time being. Discussions are continuing.
