HC Deb 06 August 1980 vol 990 cc105-6W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many trained teachers have been unable to find employment in the years 1977–78, 1978–79 and 1979–80.

Dr. Boyson

The number of people in England who were registered with the Department of Employment as unemployed and seeking teaching posts in schools were:

June 1978 June 1979 June 1980
6,292 6,666 6,543

It is not known how many of these were qualified teachers.

Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, if he will make provision for newly-qualified teachers who are unable to find appropriate employment.

Dr. Boyson

It is for local education authorities to decide on the number of newly-qualified teachers they can employ, in the light of the rate of wastage from and re-entry to teaching in their areas. Where newly-qualified teachers are unable to find teaching posts, my right hon. and learned Friend trusts that they will put their qualifications to good use in the wider employment market.
