§ Mr. Jim LesterInformation regarding the number of firms which have closed entirely is not available. However, the number of proposed closures and redundancies notified to my Department under the redundancy handling provisions of the Employment Protection Act 1975 for the Handsworth local employment office area from 1 January to 30 June 1980 is as follows:
(a) Proposed closures
123W69 employees at two establishments (included in (b) below);(b) Proposed redundancies
870 employees at 22 establishments.There is no statutory duty to notify my Department when proposed closures and redundancies do not take place.
I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that the number of redundancies reported to it as due to occur in the Handsworth local employment office area from 1 January to 30 June 1980 involved 561 employees.
These figures are provisional since some notifications are received late. Both the Department of Employment and Manpower Services Commission figures are for redundancies involving 10 or more employees.
