HC Deb 28 April 1980 vol 983 cc379-80W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will take steps to alleviate the problems being faced by the tenants of the Glen Estate, Newtownards, and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive whose estate it is, and other tenants, concerning the installation of safe heating appliances in the absence of detailed directions from the Department of the Environment about the replacement of gas fires.

Mr. Goodhart

The Northern Ireland Housing Executive is responsible for the provision and maintenance of satisfactory means of heating in its own estate.

In relation to the Glen Estate in Newtownards, I understand that Ards borough council has not yet made a decision as to the future of its gas undertaking and that meanwhile the Housing Executive is taking steps to ensure that existing gas appliances are maintained in a safe condition.
