HC Deb 21 April 1980 vol 983 c57W
Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the current strike by schoolteachers employed in the Strathclyde region in protest against the salary proposals of the Clegg Commission.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

I understand that a number of teachers have absented themselves from duty in protest at the very sketchy nature of the recommendations of the Clegg Commission on the pay of teachers in Scotland. While I can understand the feelings of teachers about the commission's report, I greatly deplore the effect which this unofficial action has had on the education of the children concerned. Discussions on the Clegg report are beginning today in the Scottish Teachers' Salaries Committee and I have no doubt that all concerned will do their utmost to reach a settlement as soon as practicable.
