§ Mr. Biggs-Davisonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland in what circumstances citizens of the Republic of Ireland are eligible as candidates and members of local authorities in Scotland.
§ Mr. RifkindIn terms of section 29 of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 57W 1973 citizens of the Irish Republic are eligible on the same basis as British subjects. Any candidate or member must have attained the age of 21 years and must be a local government elector for the area of the local authority or, during the 12 months preceding nomination, must meet the requirement as to occupancy of land or other premises as owner or tenant, or as to place of work or residence in the area of the authority.
