HC Deb 21 April 1980 vol 983 cc6-7W
Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will bring forward legislation to prohibit the sale of lists containing names and addresses of people classified under income, purchasing habits, religious persuasion and other details in breach of personal privacy.

Mr. Whitelaw

The Data Protection Committee in its report published in December 1978—Cmnd. 7341—considered the threat to privacy posed by the exchange of mailing lists and recommended safeguards to protect sensitive information about individuals. I am examining the report in the light of the outcome of consultations initiated by my predecessor.
