Mr. Wall

asked the Lord Privy Seal on what occasions the affairs of Rhodesia and Zimbabwe-Rhodesia have been discussed at the regular meetings between members of his Department and the Soviet Foreign Ministry that are held in accordance with the agreement of 17 February 1975 signed by the right hon. Member for Huyton (Sir H. Wilson) and Mr. Brezhnev; and what decisions were taken at those meetings.

Mr. Blaker

My right hon. and noble Friend discussed Rhodesia with the Soviet Foreign Minister at their meeting in New York in September 1979. Discussions between senior officials have been held from time to time. No decisions were taken.

Mr. Wall

asked the Lord Privy Seal on what occasions representatives of the Government or members of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have met Mr. Solodovnikov or other Soviet leaders in Central Africa; and what decisions were taken at these meetings.

Mr. Blaker

The British High Commissioner at Lusaka has met the Soviet Ambassador Mr. Solodovnikov on a number of occasions. There will also have been some contact between the British and Soviet delegations at the Zimbabwe independence celebrations. No decisions were taken at any of these meetings.
