Mr. Grylls

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many toxicologists there were in his Department on 1 April in each of the years 1970 to 1980.

Mr. Peter Walker

[pursuant to his reply, 3 April 1980, c. 254]: There were four qualified toxicologists in my Department on 1 April 1980. In addition, there were approximately 100 scientists concerned with subjects such as foodstuffs, the environment, and veterinary medicine, and having a close interest in toxicological matters. Figures for earlier years are not readily available.
