HC Deb 14 April 1980 vol 982 cc466-7W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the annual cost of keeping (a) a child and (b) a handicapped child in hospital in Scotland.

Mr. Fairgrieve

The cost of treating a child in a teaching hospital for sick children is about £500 per week; in a non-teaching hospital about £300 per week; and in a hospital for mentally-handicapped children about £110 per week. No separate figures are available of the cost of treating children in the paediatric wards of general hospitals or of the cost of treating physically-handicapped children.
