HC Deb 14 April 1980 vol 982 c498W
Mr. Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many gipsies or tinkers his Department estimates are travelling in this country and who take advantage of permanent sites provided by county councils.

Mr. Monro

There are estimated to be some 50,000 gipsies in England and Wales. The half-yearly count of gipsy caravans in England on 16 January 1980 indicated a total of 8,528 caravans, of which 3,031 caravans of many different types were on local authority sites.
