asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the number of deaths attributable to whooping cough among the 83,000 cases notified in 1977–78.

The number of deaths in England and Wales attributable to whooping cough was seven in 1977 and 12 in 1978.

Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services by how much the number of children under 2 years receiving whooping cough vaccination declined between 1974 and 1978; and how many cases of whooping cough were notified in 1974–75 and in 1977–78.

The vaccination rate declined from 77 to 31 per cent. The numbers of notifications of whooping cough for Great Britain were as follows:
