HC Deb 27 November 1979 vol 974 c615W
Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Minister of Transport what is the current status of the £¼ million scheme to widen the A27 between Portsmouth and Porchester, which is bypassed by the construction of the M27; and whether it is his policy to widen A-grade roads that have been duplicated by M-grade roads.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

This part of the A27 has been detrunked. Hampshire county council is putting forward the scheme referred to. Where trunk roads are duplicated by motorways, we seek to detrunk them by agreement with the local highway authority as in this case. Thereafter, it is for the highway authority to decide whether improvements are necessary in the light of local circumstances.
