HC Deb 27 November 1979 vol 974 cc614-5W
Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the current waiting period that a driving test applicant can expect to lapse between the date when he applies for a test and the date when the test is actually held (a) in the Oldham area, (b) in Greater Manchester and (c) in the North-West as a whole; and how these results compare with those for the rest of England and Wales.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

There is no driving test centre at Oldham. Waiting times for an "L" test at Bury, Rochdale and Hyde are 29, 27 and 25 weeks respectively. The average waiting time in Greater Manchester and the North-Western traffic area as a whole is about 26 weeks, and in England and Wales about 29 weeks. We are recruiting new examiners as quickly as we can.

Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the current waiting period that a driving test applicant can expect to lapse bewteen the date when he applies for a driving test and the date when the test is actually held (a) in the Huddersfield area, (b) in West Yorkshire and (c) in Yorkshire as a whole; and how these results compare with those for the rest of England and Wales.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The waiting time for an "L" driving test in Huddersfield and in the West Yorkshire area is 22 weeks. In the Yorkshire traffic area the average is 24 weeks and in England and Wales as a whole about 29 weeks. We need new examiners to reduce waiting times and we are recruiting as quickly as we can.
