HC Deb 27 November 1979 vol 974 cc590-1W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications he received under the Latin American refugee programme since it started to the latest convenient date; how many of those were admitted; how many applications are currently outstanding; and how long they have been under consideration.

Mr. Raison

Applications in respect of 5,121 cases involving 13,861 persons had been received under the Latin American refugee scheme since its inception in 1973 up to 31 October 1979. Of these, entry clearance had been granted in 1,851 cases—4,845 persons; 2,988 persons are known to have arrived in the United Kingdom. 125 cases—279 persons—were outstanding on the same date. Information as to how long these have been under consideration is not readily available.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects to announce his decision about the level of financial support for the joint working group for refugees from Latin America.

Mr. Raison

A decision about financial support for the current financial year will be announced shortly.
