HC Deb 12 November 1979 vol 973 cc473-4W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what funds are being allocated during the current financial year for the provision of geriatric hospital accommodation; and what plans he has for the coming financial year.

Mr. Fairgrieve

Capital expenditure allocations to health boards do not specify particular areas of expenditure by specialty. However, having regard to the scale of geriatric and psychogeriatric provision incorporated in the centrally financed major capital programme, overall expenditure on geriatric and psycho-geriatric beds is believed to be of the order of £12 million a year at present. A similar position should obtain in the coming financial year.

Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will discuss with Greater Glasgow health board the shortage of hospital accommodation for acute geriatric cases.

Mr. Fairgrieve

270 beds are being provided in 30-bed system-built units at a number of Glasgow hospitals, and a further 360 beds in all are planned for Belvidere, Gartnavel and Ruthergien hospitals. I have no plans to meet the board at present.
