asked the Secretary of State for Industry what has been the reduction in cloth production in the United Kingdom in the period from 1973 to the latest date for which figures are available, giving a total figure and figures for each year.

Production by the United Kingdom cotton and allied textiles industry of woven cotton and manmade fibre cloth, including mixtures, fell by 12 per cent. between 1973 and 1978, from 956 million linear metres to 841 million linear metres. Detailed figures are as follows:
