HC Deb 25 May 1979 vol 967 cc326-7W
Mr. John Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he will take to improve the situation for the mentally ill and handicapped; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Health and local authorities are developing services in accordance with broad guidance aimed at care in the community as far as possible, and giving priority to the so-called "Cinderella" services as far as pressures on resources allow. So far as necessary central action is concerned, I shall in particular continue consultations on the Mental Health Act and on the report of the committee of inquiry into mental handicap nursing and care—the Jay report.
