HC Deb 25 May 1979 vol 967 cc311-2W
Mr. John Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what steps he will take to strengthen and expand consumer protection.

Mr. Parkinson

The main protection for the consumer is vigorous competition, and my right hon. Friend announced on 15 May the Government's proposals for a first step to strengthen competition policy. A decision to make regulations on the ignitability of upholstered furniture has also been announced. Apart from these, we are not ready to announce conclusions on the need for further measures to improve consumer protection.
