HC Deb 23 March 1979 vol 964 cc231-2W
Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he is satisfied that a professional footballer who has earned £9,000 in six months in the United States of America is entitled to draw £44 a week tax free in unemployment benefit when he returns to the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Orme

The payment of unemployment benefit is not subject to a means test. Where all the conditions for receiving benefit are met, the rate payable depends on the claimant's contribution record in the relevant tax year which in most cases is the last complete tax year before the calendar year in which the claim to benefit is made.
