As my hon. Friend is aware, the Social Services and Employment Sub-Committee of the Expenditure Sub-Committee is investigating perinatal and neonatal mortality, paying particular attention to the work of the maternity and hospital services. Additionally, I have announced a programme to be launched during 1979 to increase public awareness of the scope for reduction in infant and perinatal mortality and handicap. In England, we are endeavouring to rationalise maternity services, concentrating provision in the larger and fully equipped and properly 233W staffed consultant units of district general hospitals. It is also our policy, wherever possible, to locate general practitioner maternity units on the same site as consultant units.
