asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what statutory provisions are laid down for the teaching of deaf and partially hearing children.

Teachers in special schools for deaf or partially hearing children must be qualified teachers and in addition must have or acquire within three years of taking up a post an approved further qualification. A similar requirement applies to teachers of classes for partially hearing pupils in ordinary schools except that they must have obtained an approved further qualification before taking up such a post.

The approved further qualifications currently obtainable for teaching deaf or partially hearing pupils are:

  1. (a) The Diploma of the British Association of Teachers of the Deaf (obtained by study in a special school for this handicap).
  2. (b) The Certificate in the Teaching of Deaf and Partially Hearing Children awarded by the University of London Institute of Education (full-time attendance of one year).
  3. (c) The University Diploma for Teachers of the Deaf awarded by University College Dublin (full-time attendance of one year).
  4. (d) The BA honours degree in Combined Studies of the Department of Audiology and Education of the Deaf, Manchester University.
  5. (e) The Certificate for Teachers of the Deaf awarded by Manchester University (full-time attendance of one year).
  6. (f) The Diploma in the Education of Deaf and Partially Hearing Children awarded by the Council for National Academic Awards (full-time attendance of one year).

  8. (g) The Diploma in the Education of Deaf and Partially Hearing Children of Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh (full-time attendance of one year).
  9. (h) The Diploma in Special Education (Hearing Impaired Children) of Birmingham University (full-time attendance of one year).
  10. (i) The Advanced Certificate in Education for Teachers of the Deaf of Bristol University (full-time attendance of one year).
  11. (j) The Certificate in the teaching of the Deaf and Partially Hearing awarded by the Cambridge University Institute of Education (full-time attendance of one year).
  12. (k) The Diploma in Advanced Educational Studies (Education of the Deaf) of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (full-time attendance of one year or part-time attendance for two years.

Teachers in special schools of children who are both blind and deaf or partially hearing must have or ordinarily obtain within three years of taking up a post one of the above qualifications or an approved further qualification in the teaching of the blind.
