§ Mr. Leeasked the Minister of Overseas Development if she will undertake to increase the amount of overseas aid for Tanzania in order to assist in offsetting the cost of the military operations being undertaken by that country in relation to Uganda.
§ Mrs. HartIt would be wrong to use development aid either directly or indirectly for military purposes. However as my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary announced in the House on 16 January, an additional £1 million of programme aid is being made available to the Tanzanian Government to be used for civilian rehabilitation purposes in the Kagera district, recently ravaged by war. Our overall aid expenditure on development projects in Tanzania this year is expected to show a sharp increase.
