HC Deb 19 March 1979 vol 964 cc488-9W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what proposals the Committee on Safety of Medicines has made about the drug phenacetin;

(2) if the drug phenacetin is allowed to be exported to Third world countries.

Mr. Moyle

The law as it stands does not prohibit the export of medicinal products containing phenacetin. Products containing phenacetin as an active drug substance are available in this country on prescription only, on the recommendation of the Committee on Safety of Medicines in 1973–74 that long term use of the drug should be discouraged.

The Committee on the Review of Medicines recommended in 1978 that, on grounds of safety, phenacetin had no place in analgesic, anti-inflammatory, or anti-pyrectic therapy either alone or in combination products. The Committee on the Safety of Medicines was in accord. I then announced a proposal to make an order under section 62 of the Medicines Act 1968 to prohibit the sale, supply, and importation of medicinal products containing phenacetin. I have referred a representation on this proposal to the Medicines Commission as required by section
