HC Deb 19 March 1979 vol 964 c439W
24. Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Secretary of State for Energy, in view of the fact that in Dorset local authorities are not advised of proposed oil drilling off their shores until it is too late to make useful comment, if he will take steps to remedy the situation.

Dr. Mabon

Such drilling as has taken place off the South Coast has been so far out that it has not been a matter for local authorities.

If a well should be drilled close to the shore, I would then advise the county council, so that comments could be made on the matters for which it has responsibility.

Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will seek to establish a fund for the benefit of authorities such as Purbeck council to provide them with financial assistance in the case of their coastline being adversely affected by oil exploration or infestation.

Dr. Mabon

I have no plans to do so. The oil industry has voluntarily developed the offshore pollution liability agreement under which local authorities may claim compensation for pollution damage and clean-up costs arising from off-shore oil exploration and production.
