Mr. Holland

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether the accounts of the Standing Commission on Pay Comparability will be subject to audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General.

Mr. Holland

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in the Official Report the names of the chairman and members of the Standing Commission on Pay Comparability; in each case what salary or fees will be payable; whether the appointments are part time or full time; and what is the duration of the contract in each case.

As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced on 7 March the appointments so far made to the Commission are as follows:

Chairman:

  • Professor Hugh Clegg

Members:

  • Sir Leslie Williams
  • Sir William Ryland
  • Mr. Peter Gibson
  • Mr. Harry Urwin
  • Dr. Joan Mitchell

The salary of the Chairman will be based upon the equivalent of £18,510 for a full-time year pro rata for any lesser time worked. Members will be paid £1,100 per year reflecting the part-time nature of the work. The appointments in each case are an initial period of three years.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether the Standing Commission on Pay Comparability will be required to submit its annual report to Parliament.

The Commission will report on individual references made to it by the Government in agreement with the employers and unions concerned. These will be laid before the House as Command papers.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how much time the chairman of the Standing Commission on Pay Comparability will be able to devote to the task, in view of his full-time employment at Warwick university and his part-time employment on the council of the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service.

I am confident that Professor Clegg will be able to devote the time that this most important job requires.
